special sessions & memorial services
In recent years, to commemorate historic occasions and other events, the Supreme Court has convened for oral argument at special sessions in Fresno, Orange, Riverside, San Diego, Santa Clara, and Ventura Counties and at the B. F. Hastings Building in Old Sacramento. These special sessions provide opportunities for students and other interested members of the general public to observe argument before the court.

The Supreme Court also convenes to honor justices and court staff in memorial services. See the Justices page, under the name of the individual justice, for memorials for selected members of the Supreme Court. In one exceptional instance, Bernard Witkin – the preeminent California legal scholar, was also honored in this way.
